several people hostage in a sparks standoff today. pause for nats: pop. pause. pop, pop. washoe county sheriff's swat team assisted sparks with the standoff at greenbrae and probasco for the better part of the morning. the incident began at seven this morning, with daniel enriquez surrendering six hours later. sparks detective ken gallop says as many as four people were being held inside the residence agaisnt their will. president obama has promise -- unveiling his plan to cut gun violence. that plan calls for more agents to enforce current laws -- and to have a federal reporter kenneth moton has the details from the white house. in a defining moment during his last year in office, president shed on his promise to act on gun control. president obama: every time i

me mad. the 20 first graders of the sandy hook massacre...their families and others impacted by gun violence sat in the audience and stood behind the president as he made another emotional plea. his executive actions expand background checks, requiring all gun dealers to be licensed. the president also plans to overhaul the fbi's background check system and calls for increasing the use of mental health information for checks. this is not a plot to take away everybody's guns. you pass a background check, you purchase a firearmwe know we can't stop every act of violence, every act of evil in the world. but maybe we could stop one act of violence. gop reaction was swift...calling it an attack on the second amendment. house speaker paul ryan said "rather than focus on criminals and terrorists, he goes after the most law-abiding of citizens. his words and actions amount to a form of intimidation that undermines liberty." the nra tweeted the president's plan will do nothing to improve public safety. the father of one of the sandy hook victims says it's time for sensible gun control laws.

father: every gun related death is preventable. we need your help. the white house believes the president's plan will survive any court challenge. thursday, president obama will hit the road for a gun control town hall in virginia. kenneth moton, abc news, the white house. and closer to home, local law enforcement is reacting to president gun violence. his opinion on wanting to reduce gun violence i think we can all share that sentiment but as at the same time i don't want to see the law abiding citizens, their constitutional rights restricted." coming up on kolo 8 news now at five, paul harris spoke with not only sheriff chuck, but other officials as well. and there is a common theme they say causes gun violence.### christopher kerns is in custody, in connection with an overnight robbery in stead. a 17 year old who's name won't be released was also arrested. the robbery happened just after two this morning at "jackson's chevron" on stead boulevard. police say the two were armed with a b-b gun.

were nearby and saw the two men running away and were able to arrest them. ### a mother and daughter are in washoe county jail, after deputies found three children and dozens of animals in what deputies call "deplorable living conditions." 61-year-old kathleen dean and 41-year-old joleen dean were arrested over the weekend in sun valley. deputies say they found animal feces and urine throughout the house. the children, who are between eleven and 14- years-old, are in protective custody. also in the home: ten dogs, 19 cats, 25 sugar gliders; and nearly two dozen birds including six chickens, two ducks and a turkey.### a 20-year-old reno woman at the center of a life-support battle... has died. a family attorney says aden hailu died yesterday at saint mary's regional medical center. hailu had been on life support since april when she had an adverse reaction to anesthetic during surgery.

initially pronounced hailu brain-dead in may... but her father appealed the finding to the nevada supreme court. the family is making arrangements for an autopsy to determine her cause of death. water managers from california to nevada... say... they've taken a big step forward in managing the truckee river. for just over a month now... the truckee has been managed under a new structure called the "truckee river operating agreement. it optimizes flows to allow for more savings in times of drought... and higher flows when more water is needed downstream. "it takes into account real time conditions and then based on those conditions, a number of different things can occur," "now we can hold water back in upstream reservoirs when we don't really need it and release it when we do really need it when there is a drought." the document balances the needs of california, nevada, the pyramid lake

began in 1988 under the direction of senator harry reid. it took 27 years to draft something that everyone agreed to. while californians did their part to conserve water in november, they fell short of officials' goals. residents in the golden state used 20-percent less water. but governor jerry brown mandated 25-percent conservation. today, the state water resources control board said the state remains on course to through february. residents have saved a combined 26 percent since the mandate was issued in june. ### when i tell you this, don't worry... this story has a happy ending. but, a terrifying story out of new mexico. this weekend, a woman's car was stolen with her three-year-old daughter inside. aaron drawhorn has the story. an a-p-d officer rushes to the rescue. this is the discovery that brought relief. little caraline leon- alcocar was found.... early sunday morning sitting on a curb in a

even the weather couldn't keep some from chasing a chance at a $450 million dollar powerball jackpot. unlike yesterday, the snow falling at gold ranch kept the lines short and inside at gold ranch today, though business was steady. this location gets the lion's share of local lotto sales. but those worried perhaps about long lines choose to drive a little further to this gas station on 395 north at hallelujah junction. some say the drive itself is part of the

singh "they like the area out here. they want to drive out and have a nice time." in fact he says he had a line all day yesterday. traffic at both locations picks up when the potential jackpots grow large. powerball is played in california and 43 other states, washington, d-c and puerto rico. the current jackpot of an estimated 450-million dollars is the largest in nearly a year. the drawing will be held tomorrow night at eight.### when members of the military are deployed overseas, it's usually very difficult on them and their families. but it's a little easier for one family in new mexico. that's because a father and daughter are being deployed together. sasha lenninger reports. hundreds packed the kimo theater for the national guard's yellow ribbon ceremony.

awesome to share this experience with my father. even more touching--it's krista's first time being deployed...and her father's last. the elder macias says it's a passing of the torch-- so his daughter can carry on the family's legacy of honor. both of them will be in kuwait for nine months. this got me wondering, could two members of the same family be deployed with nevada's guard? according to someone who was just deployed with the nevada air national guard, the air force has a military rule in place where if there's an only son, that child cannot be deployed with the father. and the air guard tries not to deploy married couples together, especially if they have children. the army national guard spokesperson tells me, not only does it happen with nevada's army guard... take a look at this. just monday there was a deployment ceremony in las vegas where two father and son sets, a set of siblings and two married couples deployed. it looks like the batmobile. could you soon see this on nevada roads? what ties this car to the silver state. and, a story that will probably make you want
